BITM, KOLKATA ATTRACTIONS

ELECTRICTY GALLERY

Electricity Gallery offers a fascinating insight into the world of electrical phenomena. It traces the journey of electricity from its discovery to its modern-day applications. Visitors can experiment with exhibits that demonstrate how circuits work, the concept of electromagnetism, and even the basics of power generation. Two of the prominent displays include:

i) Van de Graaff Generator

This exhibit allows visitors to experience how static electricity can make their hair stand on end.

ii) Tesla Coil Demonstration

Visitors can watch sparks fly as high-voltage electrical discharges are produced by this fascinating piece of equipment.

TELEVISION GALLERY

Television Gallery takes visitors on a journey through the history of television, from its humble beginnings to the present day. This section explains the science behind broadcasting and how television images are transmitted to screens around the world. The interactive displays allow visitors to see the different stages of image formation, learn about the functioning of CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) technology, and witness how modern flat-screen televisions work.

TRANSPORT GALLERY

The Transport Gallery showcases the evolution of various modes of transportation, from the invention of the wheel to modern-day high-speed trains and aircraft. The gallery is packed with models and interactive stations that explain the basic principles of mechanics, aerodynamics, and automotive technology. Visitors can explore:

i) The early days of steam engines.
ii) The development of modern cars and airplanes.
iii) Interactive models that demonstrate how engines, gears, and propellers work.

LIFE SCIENCE GALLERY

Life Science Gallery delves into the mysteries of biology and the human body. It explores various aspects of life sciences, from genetics and evolution to the functions of different systems in the human body. The gallery features life-sized models and engaging activities that explain topics such as:

i) The structure and function of DNA.
ii) Human anatomy and physiology.
iii) Microorganisms and their role in the ecosystem.

A learning feature of this gallery is the Transparent Human Body Model, which lights up to show how different organs in the body function.

METALS GALLERY

Metals Gallery takes visitors through the history and technology behind the extraction and use of metals. It provides insight into metallurgy, alloy formation, and the use of metals in modern engineering and construction. Visitors can learn about the properties of different metals, how ores are extracted, and the process of smelting and refining. The gallery also highlights the use of metals in various industries, from building skyscrapers to making household appliances.

LIVE DEMONSTRATIONS

One of the most exciting aspects of BITM is its live science demonstrations, which bring scientific principles to life through fun and educational experiments. These shows are conducted throughout the day and cover a wide range of topics, from physics and chemistry to biology and environmental science.

i) Science On A Sphere Show

Science on a Sphere Show uses a large spherical display system to project real-time global data, such as weather patterns, planetary movements, and ocean currents. It offers a visually captivating way for visitors to learn about Earth sciences and space exploration.

ii) Fun With Physics

Live demonstrations display key principles of physics, such as Newton's laws of motion, electromagnetism, and sound waves, through hands-on experiments. The engaging presentations help visitors understand the practical applications of theoretical physics concepts in everyday life.

iii) Chemistry In Action

In this series of demonstrations, the fascinating world of chemistry comes alive with experiments that show how chemical reactions occur. People get to see color changes, explosions, and other fun phenomena while learning about the chemistry behind them.

COAL MINE

Would you like to experience what it is like inside a coal mine?

BITM’s Mock-Up Coal Mine, the only one of its kind in India, gives a rare and first-hand experience of how a real coal mine works. You understand how air circulation and illumination inside the mine is maintained for the miners to survive and work in a dark and hostile environment. Visitors can have an idea of the coal cutting methods – both manual and mechanical, and also understand how coal is transported out of the mine, why the tunnel does not collapse after the excavation of coal, or what the safety measures are to prevent fire, flooding and collapsing of roof etc.

INNOVATION HUB & WORKSHOPS

BITM’s Innovation Hub, dedicated to fostering innovation is an area where students and aspiring inventors can work on projects, experiment with tools, and develop prototypes of new ideas. The hub is equipped with modern tools and materials that encourage hands-on learning in areas such as robotics, electronics, and 3D printing.

BITM also offers a variety of workshops on subjects like coding, model making, and basic engineering principles. These workshops are designed to engage visitors, especially children, in interactive learning experiences that stimulate creativity and problem-solving skills.

SCIENCE PARK & OUTDOOR EXHIBITS

Apart from indoor galleries, BITM’s Science Park provides an interactive way to explore scientific concepts in an open, outdoor environment. Spread across a lush green space, the Science Park features:

i) Interactive exhibits that explain fundamental principles of mechanics, sound, and optics.

ii) A giant working model of a water cycle that shows how water moves through different stages of evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. Life-sized dinosaur models that provide insight into paleontology and Earth’s ancient past.

iii) The outdoor exhibits are designed to engage curious minds with science in a playful and relaxed setting.

TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS & PROGRAMS

BITM frequently hosts temporary exhibitions on topics of current scientific relevance. These exhibitions often focus on cutting-edge technology, such as artificial intelligence, climate change, space exploration, and renewable energy.

BITM also organizes science fairs, quiz competitions, and educational programs that draw students and educators from across the region.

PLANETARIUM SHOWS

Although BITM does not have a planetarium within its premises, it often conducts astronomy shows and night-sky observation events in collaboration with the nearby Birla Planetarium. These shows are popular among astronomy enthusiasts and offer opportunities to learn about celestial bodies, planetary movements, and the universe beyond Earth.
