SCIENCE CITY, KOLKATA ATTRACTIONS

SPACE ODYSSEY

Do you dream of becoming a space scientist? Then Space Odyssey is your spacecraft.

Space Odyssey is an immersive experience that takes visitors on a simulated journey through the cosmos. Upon entering, people are greeted with a time machine, which uses multimedia effects to create a sense of traveling through time from prehistoric ages to futuristic scenes. The central feature is the Taramandal (Planetarium), a dome theater that offers shows on various celestial phenomena and space exploration. As this centre’s projectors simulate the night sky, you experience amazing constellations, planetary movements, black holes and galaxies through its shows.

Another highlight is the 3D Vision Theater, where visitors can enjoy three-dimensional films related to science and nature.

So what makes this journey so lively? It is the cinematic experience of visuals, sound and effects that make the voyage a highly exciting one. The entire section promotes curiosity about astronomy, space exploration and the mysteries of the universe.

DYNAMOTION HALL

Core science is about the principles that are at work behind diverse phenomena – and Dynamotion Hall simply teaches you these concepts – to make science easy, logical and fun.

Dynamotion Hall allows visitors to engage with hands-on exhibits designed to demonstrate the principles of physics, mechanics, and biology in a visually appealing and participatory manner. This hall is divided into several sections, each displaying different scientific occurrences.

i) Illusions

Illusions section features optical illusions and visual fantasy that highlight the complex workings of the human brain and eyes. These exhibits explain how perception can be misleading, showcasing phenomena like mirror images, perspective tricks, and holograms.

ii) Powers of Ten

This display, inspired by the iconic “Powers of Ten” video, gives people a sense of scale in the universe. The concept helps one to understand the relative sizes of things, from the atomic to the cosmic level, starting with the smallest particles to the largest astronomical objects.

iii) Maritime Exhibits

Maritime Exhibits cover interactive displays explaining the principles of fluid dynamics and ship-building technology. Models of different ships and boats are on display, explaining how they are designed to float and navigate the seas. There’s also an educational segment on the history of maritime exploration and the role of ships in commerce and discovery.

EVOLUTION PARK

Do you fear or fascinate the dinosaur? Know the evolution of life on earth at Evolution Park.

Evolution Park is an indoor walk-through diorama depicting the evolution of life on earth. It starts with the formation of single-celled organisms and traces the path through various stages of progression - marine invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, and finally, human beings. This section has life-sized models of extinct animals like dinosaurs, prehistoric mammals, and early human ancestors.

The realistic representations, along with informative plaques and interactive stations, make Evolution Park a great attraction, which is particularly popular among children due to life-like models of dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures.

EARTH EXPLORATION HALL

Earth Exploration Hall is an ideal learning environment for students of geography, heritage and environmental sciences.

Earth Exploration Hall is a two-storied gallery that highlights the geography, culture, and environment of our planet. The ground floor is dedicated to India, showcasing the country's diverse ecosystems, landmarks, and cultural heritage. Visitors can learn India’s varied landscapes, including its forests, mountains, rivers, and deserts. The display also sheds light on environmental conservation and the impact of human activity on natural ecosystems.

The upper floor of the hall gives a global perspective, taking visitors on a virtual tour of the seven continents. This section highlights the world’s natural wonders, such as the Grand Canyon, the Great Barrier Reef, and the Amazon Rainforest. Contemporary environmental issues like climate change, pollution, and deforestation showcased here, with interactive displays encouraging sustainable living.

MARITIME CENTRE

Wish to simulate the life of marine engineering and the seas?

Yes, Maritime Centre explores India's rich maritime history, along with the science and technology behind shipbuilding, navigation, and oceanography. The gallery displays models of historical ships and modern vessels, along with equipment used in navigation, such as compasses, sextants, and radar systems. There are also interactive panels that allow visitors to simulate ship operations and navigational challenges.

In addition to the exhibits, the Maritime Centre holds informative sessions on India’s maritime trade routes, naval exploration, and the development of ports and harbors across the country.

SPACE THEATRE

Space Theatre is another great attraction here, a large IMAX dome that shows educational films on space exploration, astronomy and nature with a fully immersive experience. This is one of the few IMAX domes in the country, where documentaries are based on space exploration, wildlife, and other natural sciences, creating an awe-inspiring experience for the audience.

SCIENCE PARK

Science Park is an open-air exhibition space that demonstrates scientific principles in an engaging, hands-on environment where visitors can examine and explore with levers, pulleys, waves, and sound to understand the science behind these phenomena. For example, there's a model of a giant lever where people can experience how forces balance, and a large pendulum swing that demonstrates simple harmonic motion.

Curious young minds and science enthusiasts find this section highly engaging as they get an opportunity to learn through play, while its outdoor setting makes it a relaxing place to explore science interactively.

SCIENCE SHOWS

Science City regularly hosts live science shows, which range from demonstrations of physical science experiments to multimedia presentations on various scientific phenomena. One of the most popular events is the Magic Mirror Show, which blends science with illusion, showing how visual tricks can be used to manipulate perception.

In addition, science on a sphere displays global weather patterns, planetary movements, and real-time environmental data in a visually captivating way.
