SASTRA RAMANUJAN PRIZE

SASTRA Ramanujan Prize is a prestigious international award conferred annually to mathematicians below 32 who have made outstanding contributions in areas influenced by the legendary Indian mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan. The award, established in 2005, is instituted by the Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy (SASTRA), a private university in Tamil Nadu, India. It aims to honor Ramanujan's legacy and inspire further advancements in mathematics.

BACKGROUND OF RAMANUJAN PRIZE

Named after Srinivasa Ramanujan (1887–1920), one of the greatest self-taught mathematical geniuses, the prize recognizes work in fields of Ramanujan’s work. He is celebrated for his groundbreaking insights into number theory, infinite series, Elliptic curves, Mock theta functions, Partitions and modular forms, despite limited formal training. The legend’s work continues to be a source of inspiration and remains deeply relevant in contemporary mathematics.

The prize seeks to encourage young mathematicians to follow Ramanujan’s footsteps and make transformative contributions to mathematics. Its focus on youth mirrors Ramanujan’s early brilliance, as the recipients must be under the age of 32, reflecting the brevity of Ramanujan's own life, during which he produced profound results.

RAMANUJAN PRIZE ELIGIBILITY & VALUE

The SASTRA Ramanujan Prize is awarded to mathematicians 32 years old or younger as of December 31 of the award year. The age limit honors Ramanujan's short yet impactful life, as he passed away at the age of 32.

The prize committee, comprising leading mathematicians, evaluates candidates based on the originality, significance, and depth of their contributions. The main criterion, however, is eligible candidates must have worked on areas where Ramanujan had worked on or was inspired. The award carries a cash prize of $10,000 USD and a citation.

RAMANUJAN PRIZE CEREMONY

The award ceremony is held on 22 December at the SASTRA University campus in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu—Ramanujan's hometown. This day coincides with Ramanujan’s birthday, which is also commemorated as National Mathematics Day in India, in remembrance of the legendary mathematician. The ceremony often features lectures by the prize recipient and eminent mathematicians, fostering an environment of inspiration and learning.

PRESERVING RAMANUJAN’S LEGACY

SASTRA Ramanujan Prize is a remarkable tribute to Srinivasa Ramanujan’s unparalleled legacy, which reinforces the interplay of individual brilliance and global collaboration. The legend’s identity as a self-taught mathematician serves as a powerful reminder of the potential for creativity and discovery beyond traditional academic paths.

The award highlights the transformative power of young talent in mathematics, aligning with Ramanujan’s own contributions made during his short life. Celebrating outstanding achievements in fields influenced by Ramanujan, the prize honors the past as also inspires present day mathematicians to passionately explore all futuristic possibilities of this science.

Interestingly, the award has also bolstered India’s role in the global mathematical community. Hosting the ceremony in Kumbakonam, SASTRA University connects modern mathematics with Ramanujan’s humble beginnings, which inspire young Indian students and scholars to pursue careers in mathematics. The event attracts leading mathematicians from across the world, fostering international collaboration.
