Sastra Ramanujan Prize - History & Background
2020
Dr. Shai Evra - Israel - Dr. Shai Evra was awarded the SASTRA Ramanujan Prize in 2020 for his outstanding work on high-dimensional expanders in combinatorial and geometric topology, and on "Golden Gates" for three-dimensional unitary groups. He employed deep results from representation theory and number theory, particularly related to the Generalized Ramanujan Conjectures. His fundamental paper in the Journal of Topology and Analysis extends both combinatorics and automorphic form theory, generalizing constructions of expander graphs.
2019
Dr. Adam Harper - UK - Dr. Adam Harper received the SASTRA Ramanujan Prize in 2019 for his outstanding contributions to analytic and probabilistic number theory. Harper’s work includes deep results on the Riemann zeta function, random multiplicative functions, and the "pretentious" approach to number theory. He is particularly recognized for his mastery of probabilistic methods in analytic number theory.
2018
Dr. Yifeng Liu - China - Dr. Yifeng Liu was awarded the 2018 SASTRA Ramanujan Prize for his significant contributions to arithmetic geometry and number theory. His work encompasses a broad range of topics, including arithmetic theta lifts, derivatives of L-functions, Gan–Gross–Prasad conjecture and its arithmetic counterpart, Beilinson–Bloch–Kato conjecture, geometric Langlands program, and p-adic Waldspurger theorem. These contributions have advanced the understanding of the interplay between geometry and arithmetic.
2018
Dr. Jack Thorne - UK - Dr. Jack Thorne was awarded the SASTRA Ramanujan Prize in 2018 for his significant contributions to number theory and the Langlands program. His work includes advancements in automorphy lifting theorems and the development of new techniques in the theory of Galois representations. These contributions have deepened the understanding of the relationship between Galois groups and automorphic forms.
2017
Dr. Maryna Viazovska - Ukraine - Dr. Maryna Viazovska was conferred the SASTRA Ramanujan Prize in 2017 for her groundbreaking work in number theory and discrete geometry, particularly her solution to the sphere-packing problem in eight dimensions using modular forms. She provided a stunningly simple solution to the problem in dimension 8, and then extended this work to solve it in dimension 24. Dr. Viazovska innovative techniques provided new insights into optimal packing arrangements and connections to Fourier analysis.
2016
Dr. Kaisa Matomäki - Finland - Dr. Kaisa Matomäki was awarded the SASTRA Ramanujan Prize in 2016 for her groundbreaking contributions to analytic number theory, including her work on multiplicative functions in short intervals. Her results, in collaboration with Dr. Maksym Radziwiłł, led to significant advances in understanding the distribution of prime numbers and the Möbius function.
Dr. Maksym Radziwill - Russia -
Dr. Maksym Radziwill was conferred the SASTRA Ramanujan Prize in 2016 for his outstanding contribution to analytic number theory, specificially in understanding multiplicative functions and their behavior in short intervals. His groundbreaking work, including collaborations with Dr. Kaisa Matomäki, led to major advances in prime number theory and randomness in number-theoretic functions along with breakthroughs on the parity problem.
2015
Dr. Jacob Tsimerman - Canada - Dr. Jacob Tsimerman was conferred the SASTRA Ramanujan Prize in 2015 for his outstanding contributions to number theory and arithmetic geometry, particularly his resolution of the André-Oort conjecture for Siegel modular varieties. His deep insights into transcendence theory, algebraic geometry and automorphic forms led to groundbreaking advancements in the field.
2014
Dr. James Maynard - UK - Dr. James Maynard was conferred the SASTRA Ramanujan Prize in 2014 for his contributions to number theory and in prime number distribution. His innovative methods in sieve theory led to significant improvements in bounded gaps between primes, refining Yitang Zhang’s breakthrough. Dr. Maynard’s work has revitalized the study of prime distribution, and his efforts also advanced understanding of small gaps between primes, including improving bounds on small gaps and showing the existence of infinitely many primes with a bounded difference.
2013
Dr. Peter Scholze - Germany - Dr. Peter Scholze was awarded the SASTRA Ramanujan Prize in 2013 for his groundbreaking contributions to arithmetic algebraic geometry, and the development of perfectoid spaces. His work revolutionized p-adic geometry, providing deep insights into the Langlands program and Galois representations. Scholze's path breaking work on perfectoid spaces and Galois representations led to the solution of long-standing problems and opening up new avenues of research.
